Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a technique to get your pages as high in search engine listings (such as google) as possible. Search engines crawl the web looking for web pages to index, when they have indexed the pages they are given ratings which affect where they are placed in search results. The following details what can be done  to make your rating as high as possible.

Therefore driving more people to your website via search engines.

There are essentially two types of search engine optimisation (offsite and onsite):

Onsite SEO

Onsite means making the webpage as friendly to the search engine as possible. This can be done with the following methods:

The page title should be short under 55 chars, but contain a keyword phrase relevant to the page.

The description meta data tag of the webpage is important as it will form the description on search engine listings and so is very important for conversions from your search engine results.

The actual page itself should contain plenty of text and targeted keywords and phrases be distributed in it, of course this is a balancing act as the page needs to look good to your visitors as well as to search engines.

At the start of the page there should be a header that contains your main keyword phrase for that page,  search engines such as Google look on this as a good indication that the page contains content relevant to the key phrase.

The main keywords should ideally be near the top of the page in the introduction paragraph and also in the closing paragraph of the page (near the bottom).

In the body of web page text it does no harm to highlight keywords in bold (again Google likes this).

Another factor that affects the body of the page is keyword density , this is percentage of how many times your keyphase appears in the page text.

Offsite SEO

Offsite optimisation is basically getting inbound links to your website (be very wary of anyone telling you they have an automated tool for this, as Google frowns upon that practice).

The best inbound links are relevant one way (i.e. to your site not reciprocal , e.g. I'll link to you if you link to me), and that grow organically over time.

Examples of relevant inbound links:

  • Directories such as freeindex , yell, hotfrog and so on advertising your product or service.
  • Links from social network or social book marking tools (eg facebook, myspace, digg, stumble upon)
  • Locational links targeted at a certain geographical area eg google maps, gumtree directory
  • Links from any posts you do on internet forums

The more quality inbound links to your site the better.
